Build Wealth, Not Debt. First State Saves Campaign Launched
State Treasurer Jack Markell joined with New Castle County Executive Chris Coons and Wilmington Mayor James Baker to officially launch a new saving campaign, First State Saves, and to announce the City of Wilmington’s partnership with the new savings campaign to encourage City residents and employees to make a commitment to personal savings and debt repayment.
The campaign, an offshoot of the national America Saves Campaign, is designed to encourage Delawareans to build wealth, not debt through a commitment to regular savings. The program provides education and motivation to save in a time when the national rate of savings is at a historic low, and people spend more than they earn.
"We strongly encourage Delawareans to make it a priority to pay themselves first by setting aside some money into savings," State Treasurer and Honorary Chairperson of First State Saves, Jack Markell said. "Simply put, strong saving habits are critical to achieving long-term financial success."
The primary goals of the First State Saves program are to promote and increase savings and the accumulation of wealth among individuals and families in Delaware. All benefits are offered free of charge to First State Saves member. Benefits include; wealth coaches; access to no fee and low fee accounts and products offered by local financial institutions; invitation to attend free financial education classes and events; free subscription to the quarterly American Saver newsletter; fact sheets on savings strategies; and other tools to assist the member to become successful in their saving goals.
First State Saves is supported by a group of over 40 financial intuitions, nonprofit organizations, government officials and agencies and businesses.
